The events of the past week have made it painfully clear to me that I just don't have the time to do Pixel Sumo anymore. Additionally I've not been able to find enough people willing to put the same effort into this as I have and maintain the same level of quality to ensure the sport is executed properly.
Matches are suspended until further notice. Furthermore, no one is authorized to run Pixel Sumo matches in my absense - all gyoji authorizations are revoked.
To the wrestlers, thanks for your participation and I'm sorry it has to end so suddenly like this. To the fans...sorry, it was fun while it lasted.

Sorry to everyone, especially Accura Kurosawa, our translator and one of my gyoji for being unable to attend and supervise the exhibition matches this past Saturday. My RL has required more and more of my time and I am not able to always predict when things will take me away on short notice.
Gyoji Kurosawa has decided to leave the staff of Pixel Sumo. I'd like to thank him for all he's done for us, especially in the translation department. I wish him well and we'll always welcome him back if he wishes to return to help Pixel Sumo.

Sekiwake Aelus wins again

Sekiwake Aelus defeated Yokozuna Derrick to win matches #46. Perhaps the big news of the night is new comer Onp Halcali (pictured above looking something like Little Bo Peep) wrestling like a champ at her first time on Pixel Sumo. She was awarded the Fighting Spirit Award for holding off Yokozuna Derrick, Sekiwake Aelus and Komusubi Cyber better than most ranked wrestlers could have - even on the reduced 3M disc. She may be the first new comer to compete on the 3M disc.

Sekiwake Aelus is Grand Champion

Having made his first appearance at the SLCC demo matches just yesterday, today Aelus Janus took top honors winning both the Summer Grand Basho West as well as the entire Summer Grand Basho. This is the second time a relative new comer has been Grand Champion of a basho.
The east event had a 3 way tie for champion: Neon, Derrick and Aiko. The west event had a tie for champion: Aelus and ZATZAi. Both Aelus and ZATZAi received 5 quality points during the west event so they were tied for Grand Champion of the entire basho. A tie breaker match was fought and Aelus won. With his 4 points awarded, Aelus went from Komusubi to Sekiwake in one day.

Neon, Derrick & Aiko Tie for Champion of Summer Grand Basho East

Both Yokozuna chose to compete in the East event so I knew we'd probably end up in some sort of tie. As it turned out the two Yokozuna tied. Yokozuna Neon was disqualified in a match against Ozeki Aiko (AO error) which led to all three having 4 wins. Although Aiko ended up with 4 wins and a quality point (for her defeat of Neon) I decided to declare a three way tie for champion. New comer Mach Volitant was runner-up with 3 wins. I need to come up with a better way to avoid ties like this.

I've personally sent invitations to all the ranked wrestlers to come compete in the coming basho event. I was surprised to find that some had left the group and some rejected the invitation. Obviously either of these actions means they no longer wish to be involved in our sport and therefore have been retired from the active wrestlers roster.

Neon wins again

We had a very light crowd tonight but I was not in a mood to cancel the matches. Komusubi Cyber, Sekiwakes Davgor and Jessica and Yokozuna Neon competed basho style (each wrestler facing each other wrestler at least once) in Matches #37. Yokozuna Neon took champion honors and Sekiwake Jessica took runner-up. Jessica needs just one more point to advance to Ozeki.
I will be away for a few weeks and my new Gyojis Kisto and Accura will be running matches. I trust you'll give them the same support and respect that I enjoy ^_^.

Aiko promoted to Sekiwake in Matches #36

It was a light crowd this morning at Matches #36 but it ended up a fine event for Sekiwake Aiko as she advance in rank. She beat out several new comers as well as one experienced wrestler at the new dohyo on Artificial Isle. One Makuuchi match was conducted between Yokozunas Derrick and Neon which ended in a draw and each was awarded 1 point.

I also used the matches as a training session for Gyoji Accura, who ran round 1 and Gyoji Kisto who ran round 2.

I've been a citizen of SL for 1.5 years now. Over that time I have done many things but now I do only 1 thing - provide content to a world without content. Special Matches #2 at Artificial Isle

We had a good turn out for the exhibition matches at Pixel Sumo's new home, Artificial Isle. Komusubi Alex Fitzsimmons was the champion of the matches, winning 1 point in Pixel Sumo, 300L and a Helo AV compliments of Artificial Isle. Clipse Araw was runner-up, but sadly that gets you nothing in special matches. Both were very high-spirited competitors and I hope we see them at the weekly matches.
Also worth note of the new competitors was Justine, Chang, SpecOps, Yasmine and ZATZAi herself who all gave the sumo a try. Oh and my old friend Squeedoo, glad to see you again ^_^. Special guest spectator was the infamous FlipperPA - always nice to have a big name in the crowd. We'll get you in the dohyo next time.

New rules and new gyoji coming soon

With our move to Artificial Isle, I'll be introducing new rules, new gyoji and we'll have two divisions. The junior division will be for new wrestlers and ranked wrestlers up to (including) Komusubi. The senior division will be for Sekiwake, Ozeki & Yokozuna. Details on how the divisions will operate will come soon. The main purpose behind this split is to allow new comers the chance to advance in rank and face the senior ranked wrestlers when they are ready.

Grand news: Artificial Isle is now host of Pixel Sumo

Long time friend of Pixel Sumo, ZATZAi Asturias, and I have worked out a deal to give Pixel Sumo a new home on Artificial Isle. In this new era of Pixel Sumo there will be additional gyoji and other staff to run weekly matches and I will run the seasonal grand bashos. Some of you in the group will be contacted to fill new roles in the organization and I'm looking forward to expanding the staff and the participation to help our sport grow. First thing - I will try to conduct matches Thu 31 May at 8pm and Mon 4 Jun at 5am. That said...RL has a way of sneaking up on you and taking all your time. In what I like to call "the before times", I had plenty of time in SL and plenty of time to conduct matches. Now my time is limited and when match time rolls around I'm exhausted. Presently I cannot commit to any time to run matches. If I have the time and energy I'll make an announcement in the group. I'll be speaking with our Yokozuna to see if they wish to run matches. Jessica wins Basho Central; promoted to Sekiwake

Ozeki Kisto and Sekiwake Jessica were both at the Central event and we expected fireworks there - but there was a suprise - Vladimere. Kisto and Jessica were evenly tied throughout the matches but newcomer Vladimere was doing just as well. Then when each faced him they both ended in draws. So it came down to Kisto vs Jessica for champion of the event. Jessica won; Kisto and Vladimere tied for runner-up.

Neon takes Basho East; promoted to Yokozuna

Not that it is much of a suprise, but he has done it. In less than 2 months from his first appearance in the Pixel Sumo demonstration matches at Second Convention, Neon Serge has risen from Komusubi to Yokozuna. Neon was undefeated (6-0) in the Spring Grand Basho East beating all that came against him. Yokozuna Derrick was runner-up at the event and could not have been prouder upon seeing Neon with his new Yokozuna kesho-mawashi. Yokozunas Derrick and Neon have trained together since they first met at the old Ilgop dohyo. Congratulations to Yokozuna Neon for his dedication and skill to rise to the rank of Yokozuna so quickly.

Spring Grand Basho 2007

Monday - 3 events / 1 basho.
Spring Grand Basho East - 6AM
Spring Grand Basho Central - 2PM
Spring Grand Basho West - 8PM
Each wrestler may participate in only 1 of the 3 events.

We will take no less than 6 and no more than 10 wrestlers per event. I will declare that no more wrestlers will be taken for the event and we will begin matching each wresters against each other wrestler. This type of event is much more involved than the usual pyramid/advancement event but will allow more accurate evaluation of each wrestler's skills.

A champion will be declared for each event and will receive 200L and 2 points in Pixel Sumo. A runner-up will be declared for each event and will receive 100L and 1 point in Pixel Sumo. Scores will be compared across all 3 events and a basho champion and runner-up will be declared. The basho champion will receive another 200L and 2 more points in Pixel Sumo. The runner-up will receive another 100L and another point in Pixel Sumo.

Choose your event wisely. I wouldn't go up against Ozeki Neon, Ozeki Kisto or Komusubi Jessica lightly. If you get to an event and see one of them on the red seats, you might want to come back to a later event ^_^. Ozeki Neon is 2 points away from becoming our 2nd Yokozuna. So it's fairly likely that he will at least make it by the end of the Spring Grand Basho.

Tonight I overslept and missed the time I was supposed to run the matches. I appologize...these things happen. However it appears that some of my wrestlers were not content to understand that I simply fell asleep and made some disparaging comments regarding my absence. Look - I pay for this sport week after week and if I fall asleep cause I've had a full day, I'm sorry. Thanks to my loyal supporters that filled me in on this very disappointing conduct.

Pixel Sumo Council

Past efforts to organize a staff to assist with the management of Pixel Sumo have not brought about the results I've desired. So I've formed the Pixel Sumo Council. Members will be handpicked by me. They will be people who have been instrumental in the growth of Pixel Sumo and who are interested in helping the sport continue to grow. Wrestlers will not be allowed on the council as certain decisions by the council will directly effect the rules of the sumo. Yokozuna will hold advisory seats on the council but will not be allowed to vote on rules. A list of the council members will be published soon.

Kisto wins the first matches held at the new home of Pixel Sumo in disturbing world. This also makes the 2nd consecutive week she's taken champion honors. Her accumlated 7 points puts her one point away from Ozeki and also makes her the 3rd highest ranked wrestler. It was a small crowd but an enthusiastic one that came for sumo tonight.

Neon & Kisto go 25 min to a draw to win Matches #30

An historic matches, to say the least. Some of our sports greatest wrestlers came to compete at the matches tonight. Matches #30 is the first "night" matches to be conducted in a long time and is the new time/day for future matches for the US time zones. The crowd was small (typical for time changes of matches) but we had enough wrestlers to start on time. The "elite" wrestlers (Derrick, Neon, Jato, Ed and now Kisto) had to wrestle on 4m dohyo vs the usual 6m dohyo. But even this change to shorten the length of these elite wrestlers' matches didn't shorten the matches all that much. Derrick & Neon had a match last over 10 min that ended in Derrick finally falling off. The final match was Sekiwake Neon vs Komusubi Kisto which went on for a record 25 minutes. I decided that this incredible match had gone on long enough and declared a draw and awarded both champion prizes.
This matches also marks the last matches in Ilgop. Maegashira vaguegirl now has an island sim and Pixel Sumo will be moving there over the next week. Our new home should provide a far less laggy environment for our sport to continue to flourish in. Next matches is scheduled for Wed, 4 April 2007, 7pm - I should be able to at very least put a dohyo up to keep matches on track.

Pixel Sumo has now reached a point where not only the ranked wrestlers are good but there are several up and coming wrestlers that nearly equal their skill. In the early days of our sport, they would have easily defeated all that came against them...

Neon Serge undefeated in Matches 27

Quite an exciting matches today. With SL reopening only 20 minutes prior to today's matches, we still started on time and had a wonderfully lag-free environment. Komusubi Neon stormed thru 4 matches defeating Komusubi Ed in the final match to take champion honors today. He was also awarded a Gyoji's cup for his performance today. In winning the final match, Neon brought his 2 points up to 4 and Ed brought his 3 points up to 4 granting them both the rank of Sekiwake. Neon & Ed faced off twice during the matches today and the "Derrick/Jato rule" had to be invoked because their matches were going on too long. During the final match, Ed got news that his Dad was admitted to the hospital and he was able to keep going, but I'm sure it effected his performance. We here are Pixel Sumo wish Ed's Dad a speedy recovery.
In other matches Komusubi Kisto performed well up until she faced Neon and was knocked out. Maegashira vaguegirl was awarded a quality point for defeating Komusubi Tsukasa.

Yokozuna Derrick sweeps Matches 26

Undefeated today, winning 4 matches in a row, Yokozuna Derrick reminded the crowd why he is a Yokozuna. He took champion honors for the matches as well as his 2nd Gyoji's Cup making him the first wrestler to earn 2 Gyoji's Cups. Komusubi Neon Serge came to compete today and he showed the crowd he was not just a fluke in winning the exhibition matches at Second Convention. He gave Derrick quite a run for his money in the first match today and had to face him again in the final match. Losing to Derrick both times, he held his own against the best of our sport and took runner-up honors today. Derrick being the gracious winner practiced wrestling with Neon for quite some time after the matches today. Another face to return today was Maegashira Aiko Seymour who faced Derrick in round 2. The match was a long one and she gave Derrick a good challenge. Aiko is another one to keep your eye on in the future.

Neon & Nicole win matches at Second Convention

Our first ever "special matches" were conducted as part of Second Convention on 8 Mar 2007. The event was conducted on a "wrestle-as-they-arrive" basis so there was no typical progression of competitors to a final match. I also did the "pay-per-win" method instead of prize money at the end. Komusubis Ed and Angelina were on hand to show folks how its done and many folks gave it a try. In the end, I chose two of the most enthusiastic wrestlers and had them do the final match granting each 1 point in Pixel Sumo for their achievement.
Thanks to my friend ZATZAi (who also gave the sumo a try) for letting us participate in Second Convention and I hope to see all the folks again at regular matches.

henako Humby named Grand Champion of Winter Grand Basho

With an 83% win average, a Gyoji's Cup and 6 quality points, Komusubi henako won Grand Champion honors which included 2 more points in Pixel Sumo granting her the rank of Sekiwake. Komusubi Kisto Schreiner is the runner-up with an 80% win average, a Gyoji's Cup and 2 quality points.
The titles and prizes were awarded at the time the Winter Grand Basho West event was to have taken place. Sadly it was cancelled as only 4 competitors showed up. Among the ranked wrestlers to come for the west matches were Sekiwake Davgor and Komusubi Changurr.
Lag was actually quite low and no restart was requested prior to the event.

Newcomer Kisto Schreiner wins Winter Grand Basho Central

Amazing but true!! Another new comer wins a basho event. Kisto lost her first match to Komusubi Tsukasa but then went on to win her next 4 matches. She was awarded a Gyoji's Cup for doing so well on her first time at Pixel Sumo. Komusubi Cyber was runner-up at the event - his second time participating in a Pixel Sumo event.
Lag wasn't too bad before the event but I requested a restart anyway and Mia Linden took care of us. Thanks Mia! ^_^

Newcomer henako Humby wins Winter Grand Basho East

Amazing but true! She came to Pixel Sumo for the first time today, wrestled and defeated not only Sekiwake Mayura but Yokozuna Derrick as well. Lag was not to blame today as the Lindens restarted the sim just prior to the event and there was little to no noticable lag.

A very good crowd turned out today for the opening of the Winter Grand Basho. Seventeen matches in total were fought and the new Komusubi henako Humby came out on top. For being winning 5 of her 6 matches she received the "Gyoji's Cup" which recognizes especially talented wresters in a matches event. She also won an unprecidented 6 quality points (awarded for defeating wrestlers above your rank) in one matches event. I was so taken with her skill that I awarded her an additional and unscheduled prize of 200L. Her performance today could secure her the Grand Champion spot for the Winter Grand Basho but we'll have to wait till Friday to see.

But henako was not the only newcomer to impress the fans and me. 8SUO Halley and Aiko Seymour put on impressive displays in all their matches and especially against Yokozuna Derrick. They are definately 2 to keep your eye on in coming matches.

Special thanks to Chiyo Linden for restarting the sim the dohyo is in just prior to the matches - the event would have been ruined without her wonderful support today.

A historical day in Pixel Sumo for 2 reasons. First the good news. Ozeki Derrick co-wins the 6am matches today pushing him over the top to 17 points and granting him the rank of Yokozuna. He was presented with his custom Yokozuna kesho-mawashi (the gold dragon) and tsuna. Derrick is the longest and most consistant supporter/participant in Pixel Sumo, always carries himself in a manner befitting the sport, has a extraordinary win record and is well deserving of the rank. Congratulations Derrick from the staff of Pixel Sumo. Well done!
OK the bad news...co-winner? What are you sniffing, Eb? Yes, co-winner. The final match today, for the first time ever, was called a draw on account of LAG!!! The wrestlers went back and forth, like 2 ducks swimming in molassass until I could bear it no more. We all watched and hoped for a break in the lag, but it was relentless. Mind you there were only about 10-15 people at the matches and I asked folks to remove any scripted items to help reduce lag. Also there may have been a grand total of 5 other people in the entire sim. Realizing the situation would not improve I wrote a tragically needed new rule to Pixel Sumo on the spot.
"If a final match cannot be properly finished due to excessive lag, both wrestlers of the final match will be declared co-winners. Total prize monies will be divided equally between the two and each will receive 2 points in Pixel Sumo."
The way things are going this probably will not be the last time this rule will be applied. So Komusubi Ed was co-winner today, bringing him up to 3 points. Ed is another good wrestler to keep an eye on. Ed made his first appearance on 1 Feb and has racked up an impressive 4 quality points in a short time.
We'll see how it goes on Thursday. I'm going to see if I can get the sim restarted prior to the matches this time.

The Matches from Lag Hell

Matches #24 was one for the record books. A record I never want to break. The lag was unbearable. I typed words and they'd show up 30 seconds later. In this lag heavy environment we tryed to conduct the matches and it got worse and worse. Several of our die-hard fans left the matches were so bad. On top that, some Capt Jack Sparrow wannabe showed up and rained on our parade. He won a match vs someone that clearly wasn't sure what to do, so I called for a redo of the match. He got a little lippy but agreed to the redo but then got rude and decided to leave. About that time I read some green text regarding a nuke being prepared. I couldn't see a nuke anywhere but he was heading back to the dohyo (from the entrance) and decided not to give him the chance. He became our first freeze-eject&ban. Even if he was not about to detonate a nuke, his behavior and rudeness to me and the fellow competitors earned him the ejection. Then the sim crashed. Most of the winners from round 1 returned and finished the matches. Even after the sim crashed and restarted, conditions were not that good.

Since the last several matches have been laggy, I anticipated this and had asked "help request" if it would be possible before matches to restart the sim. The Linden I talked to agreed they would if they felt the sim was performing poorly. I checked the lag at 1:50pm and hoped to get a restart. I contacted "help request" but got no response even after 45 min. Icing. After the matches I contacted "help request" again and after explaining the situation ... "we are very busy", "we do the best we can". Sure, I appreciate the challenges they face, but in the end it just feels like they don't care.

So new-comer Cyber Metropolitan took champion honors today and Tsukasa Keiko was runner-up. Its a shame their first Pixel Sumo experience was the worst day in Pixel Sumo history.

On the bright side, Natalia Zelmanov came to watch the sumo today and wrote a wonderful piece in her blog. Thanks Natalia, I appreciate the kind words and hope to see you again at the dohyo ^_^

Mayura wins Matches #23 and makes Sekiwake

Great turn-out this morning for Matches #23 as Japanese citizens came in droves to watch Pixel Sumo. Lag was a huge factor in the matches and cost Ozeki Derrick 2 critical wins which kept him out of the final round.
Mayura swept the matches (4-1) and faced off against new comer Sephiroth Katscher (3-1) in the final match. Mayura won champion bringing her total up to 4 points after participating in only 3 matches. She's one to keep an eye on. Sephiroth did very good for a new comer, losing only the final match.

Winter Grand Basho Dates Set

The Winter Grand Basho will be the week of 26 February and basho events will be:
1) Monday 26 Feb 6AM
2) Thursday 1 Mar 3PM - conducted as part of Second Convention on Artificial Island
3) Thursday 1 Mar 7PM
The third event will be part of the Second Convention event. Wrestlers, be sure to review the changes in the grand basho structure so you will be fully aware of the differences between the usual matches event and a basho event.

New Grand Basho rules published

Here's the excerpt from the rules defining how a Grand Basho will be conducted from now on:

A grand basho is three matches events grouped into one larger event. The three events may be all one one day at three different times (example: 6am, 2pm, 7pm) or held over several days at different times to allow maximum participation by citizens from around the world.

A competitor may only participate in one of the grand basho events. To allow participation in multiple grand basho events would give them an unfair advantage in selecting the overall grand basho winner.

In each of the grand basho events, competitors will be paid per win:
new comer/Maegashira: 10L
Komusubi, 15L
Sekiwake, 20L
Ozeki, 25L
Yokozuna, 35L
A champion and runner-up will be chosen for each grand basho event. The champion will receive 2 points in Pixel Sumo and runner-up will receive 1 point. No additional prize money will be given at the end of a grand basho event but rather the scores of all who compete will compared to choose an overall winner for the grand basho prize money.

When all grand basho events are done an grand basho champion and runner-up will be chosen based on a combination of wins vs loses, points received and any quality points that were awarded.

Grand Basho champion will receive 500L, 2 points and the Pixel Sumo Basho Cup; runner up will receive 250L and 1 point.

Pixel Sumo to be featured in Second Convention

Ozeki Derrick wins Matches #22

Long matches, close calls...excitement a plenty. Maegashira Ed Yoshiro took runner-up honors granting him Komusubi rank.

The matches started out with Ozeki Derrick facing off against Sekiwake Jato. The match was long...too long. So I restarted the match, but this time reducing the dohyo to 5 meters x 5 meters. The result was Ozeki Derrick losing. While this is not covered in the rules, reducing the dohyo size to make it harder for two skilled wrestlers is a logical alternative to letting them go at it indefinately. As much as I enjoy Pixel Sumo, even I don't want to watch a match that goes on for too long. Sekiwake Jato received one quality point for defeating a wrestler one rank above his. Ozeki Derrick rematched later to advance to round 2.
A suprise in round 2 when Maegashira Ed Yoshiro defeated Komusubi Gizmo. For this he received one quality point and it qualified him for the final match and a guaranteed promotion to Komusubi.

Also in round 2 Ozeki Derrick and Sekiwake Jato faced off again. I reduced the dohyo size again, but the skills of these two wrestlers adapted quickly. We were in for another long match as both of these highly determined wrestlers went back and forth. The match ended as Sekiwake Jato fell off the dohyo followed, after a slight delay, by Ozeki Derrick. While this often is call for a "redo" in Pixel Sumo, I viewed this as a clear enough situation for me to declare Ozeki Derrick the winner. My decision on this match was called into question so I mentally reviewed my position on this type of match ending. If a wrestler goes straight at another and both fall of together, this sort of move is frowned upon becausethe pusher fails to remain in the dohyo. In this case it seemed more a mistep on Ozeki Derrick's part because he was able to cling to the dohyo after the move. I announced that I would stand by my decision but would review the rules regarding this sort move in Pixel Sumo. I'm proud to say that Sekiwake Jato took the decision in the best way possible - in the spirit of good sportsmanship and honor.

The final match put Maegashira Ed Yoshiro versus Ozeki Derrick. Much to my suprise and to Ed's credit, he was able to hold off Ozeki Derrick for much longer than we imagined. But in the end it was Ozeki Derrick that stood alone in the dohyo. The two points Ozeki Derrick received for winning today put him at 15 points making him the top ranked wrestler in Pixel Sumo and only one point away for qualification for Yokozuna.

Sekiwake Jato Rolland was awarded the first ever Fighting Spirit Award for defeating a higher ranked wrestler, his good sportsmanship conduct in the face of a close call decision not in his favor, and the honor and spirit he brings to Pixel Sumo. I have no doubt that with his skill and demeanor he will become one of the greatest Pixel Sumo wrestlers of all time.

Grand Basho restructure

Originally Pixel Sumo was held at the same time every week and the same small group would attend matches. During that time I wrote the rules for Pixel Sumo and the manner in which grand basho would be conducted. As Pixel Sumo has grown, I have moved match times around to give people in different time zones the opportunity to participate. Response has been good at three time slots in the SL day: 6am, 2pm and 8pm. The old model of the Grand Basho being just one matches event would be unfair to those in the other two time slots and would be difficult for them to participate or attend. To fix that I'm resturcturing the grand basho to be a full three matches events all conducted on the same day. Each event will have an event winner and there will be an overall grand basho winner. Specifics on the changes and how the overall winner will be computed will be posted very soon.

Since Matches #9 I've maintained complete match results and now I've compiled them in a database and can now compute winning averages for winners and maintain career records easily. Wrestlers are sorted by their winning average. This information is now available on the "Pixel Sumo Complete Stats" link in links area of the blog page.

Quality Points

I'm adding a secondary system of points to reward lower ranking wrestlers that defeat higher ranking wrestlers in matches. One quality point will be awarded for each level of rank that separates the wrestlers.
Example:
Maegashira defeats Komusubi = 1 point
Komusubi defeats Ozeki = 2 points
and so forth.

I'm still thinking about how these points will be used, but am going thru the match data to see how many of these should be awarded.

Pixel Sumo Yokozuna criteria change

Since we are now close to actually having, not only one but two, Yokozuna ranked wrestlers, I've reviewed the RL criteria for Yokozuna promotion and am making the following change (this will be reflected in the rules before the next match).

current rule:
Pixel Sumo Wrestler Ranks:
Yokozuna, Grand Champion, 16 points (Promotion to this rank also requires the wrestler to win a Grand Basho Match. Wrestlers with 16 points will remain Ozeki until they win a Grand Basho.)

new rule:
Yokozuna, Grand Champion, 16 points (Promotion to this rank also requires the wrestler to win two consecutive matches, as champion, while holding the rank of Ozeki. Wrestlers with 16 points will remain Ozeki until they meet this criteria.)

This rule change does not adversly effect either of the current Ozeki wrestlers as both have met this criteria. The source for this decision change was taken from the Criteria for Promotion portion of the Wikipedia page on Yokozuna.

Ozeki Derrick takes Matches #21; ties with Ozeki Malbogio for top wrestler position

It was a good turn out this morning for Matches #21. Ten wrestlers competed for top honors and at the end of the matches Ozeki Derrick stood alone in the dohyo. Now with 13 points, he ties Ozeki Malbogio as top Pixel Sumo Wrestler. A newcomer ryuryu Box took runner-up with an excellent display of sumo skill for one that is new to our sport.

As Pixel Sumo expands with more matches, more press, you'll start to see more people with the title Yobidashi at the dohyo. Some are volunteers, some hired hands but all of them have a job to perform at the dohyo. So if they ask something of you just know they are officials of Pixel Sumo.

Pixel Sumo spreads to Japan

Special thanks to Ikuko Spinotti and Mika Mip, whom I met yesterday morning, for posting information to slcom.jp about Pixel Sumo. Since then I've had a stream of Japanese SL citizens visiting the dohyo and interested in competing and watching the matches.
This is where the limitations of RL come into SL. Doing matches for the Japanese citizens means doing them first thing in the morning for me here in the US. But I'm determined to do what I can to give them the opportunity to compete in Pixel Sumo.

Two treats in one. On the very same day that LINZOO opened her shop at the dohyo complex, she took champion honors at Pixel Sumo Matches #16.
We had a heck of a time getting enough folks to compete. LINZOO stepped up at the last minute before I was about to cancel the matches and was our #6 competitor.

Recently I have been moving the time around that matches are conducted. This is partially due to personal time constraints but also it is to try and find the optimal time for best particiapation based on times around the world. Recently I've conducted matches at 11am and 2pm SL time and found them both to have good turn-out, especially the 2pm time. This isn't to say the 8pm matches will not return but for now I have to run them earlier. Sorry for all this moving around of match times. I'm hoping to stabalize it in the near future.
As for the Winter Grand Basho, I'm hoping to run it at 8pm on Feb 15. I'll post the date and time when it is certain.

Komusubi Davgor undefeated in Matches #15

One of Pixel Sumo's greatest fans took top honors at Matches #15 today. Davgor has been competing since Matches #10 and was runner-up in Matches #14. Newcomer, and parter of Komusubi Gizmo, Jato Rolland was runner-up. Komusumi Jato defeated Ozeki Derrick to make it to the final round.
It was a great turnout for the event especially considering we've never had matches at 2pm. Matches survived a sim crash during round 3. All necessary competitors returned to finish the matches.
I'll post a few more details later.

Newcomer Gizmo Gorky swept aside all that faced her in the dohyo shooting straight to the final match and taking champion honors. It was a large Sunday crowd in spite of NFL playoff games on TV in the US. Thanks to everyone that came out and I hope to see you at the next matches as we build up to the big Winter Grand Basho in a few weeks where someone will, more than likely, become the first Yokozuna in Pixel Sumo.

Matches #12 cancelled & more press for Pixel Sumo

Tried to run an 11am matches for the European SL folks, but it seems the holidays have too many of the interested competitors away from SL.

The few that turned out had a great time trying some practice matches and they were a fun group. For their spirited attempts, they were awarded the rank of Maegashira which is usually reserved for those that have competed in actual matches. Thanks for coming out Taco, Latonia, DiscoQ, Jono, Stephen and of course Davgor. Davgor wrote a very nice piece on Pixel Sumo that will be appearing in the Konstrukt soon. Be sure to check that out.

Ozeki Malbogio takes cup at Autumn Grand Basho

Three ranked wrestlers along with three returning wrestlers and one newcomer came to compete and try to take the cup at the first Pixel Sumo Grand Basho. I decided to conduct the matches as a Basho in spite of coming up short one ranked wrestler since we had a sponsor, Bare@Rose, and turn out for the event was so good. The event also showed off the newly expanded Pixel Sumo Dohyo Complex - two levels below soon to have a sushi bar and a few shops.

Just added in time for the Basho is the new rank of Maegashira. Maegashira are technically not ranked wrestlers but wrestlers that have competed in Pixel Sumo before and the title is a way of recognizing their continued participation in Pixel Sumo.

Round one saw Ozeki Malbogio crush Komusubi Squash; Komusubi Derrick defeated Maegashira Tommy; Maegashira MidnightRaptor lost to Maegashira Changurr; Maegashira Tommy beat newcomer Rustet; and in the rematch, Rustet edged out Maegashira MidnightRaptor.

In round two the unstoppable Ozeki Malbogio beat Komusubi Derrick; Maegashira Changurr defeated Maegashira Tommy; Maegashira Tommy got one more chance to advance and defeated newcomer Rustet.

Round 3 gave us left us with only 3 competitors so Ozeki Malbogio sat this round out and Maegashiras Tommy and Changurr met to see who would go against him for the Grand Basho cup. In a grudge match from the previous week's matches, Maegashira Changurr again defeated Maegashira Tommy to advance to the final match.

Ozeki Malbogio vs Maegashira Changurr went head to head in the final match and again the unstoppable Malbogio is the victor. Malbobio as champion received the Grand Basho Cup, 3 points and 280L while Changurr received 2 points, granting her the rank of Komusubi and 125L as runner up. Pixel Grand Basho #1: 30 Nov 2006

The time has come to conduct our first Grand Basho. We have successfully conducted 9 matches in preparation for this grand event. This will be the Autumn Basho for 2006. Since Basho are not regular matches, we need at least 4 ranked wrestlers to compete in order to conduct the Basho. If less than 4 ranked wrestlers come to compete we will conduct the event as Pixel Sumo Matches #10 provided we have 6 regular competitors.

Basho prizes are doubled and so is the trophy size ^_^. Review the rules if you want all the details.

Squash Antfarm squashes the competition in Matches #9

It was a great crowd that turned out on a special holiday week, Saturday night matches. With only one returning wrestler and a batch of newcomers, it was a night of surprises and excitement.

Lag was the theme of the night as record numbers of citizens in SL seemed to affect everyone a little bit. In round 1, returning competitor Changurr Cao lost to December Frontenac. Tommy Takahe defeated American Antfarm. Squash Antfarm beat Laura Saltwater. Laura got another shot to wrestle, but came up short against Emma Gardiner. American beat out Changurr in the round 1 rematch (picture 1).

Round 2 matches put the round 1 matches against each other. December handily defeat Tommy with a quick strike that pushed him from the ring. Squash and Emma went head-to-head in a long well fought match but at the end she unexpectedly jumped from the ring thus being disqualified (picture 2). Emma's exceptional spirit in the ring gave her a second chance and met American in the round 2 rematch where she put up a great fight but lost.

Final matches of the night pitted Squash against American. Another long well fought match but Squash stood victorious as American fell from the ring. This set the stage for the champion match: Squash versus December (picture 3). They faced off in a long match, back and forth, both wrestling with great precision, but in the end it was Squash that stood alone in the dohyo. As per the rules of Pixel Sumo, Squash was awarded 150L, the Pixel Cup for Matches #9, and 2 points granting him the rank of Komusubi. Runner-up December was awarded 75L and 1 point granting her the rank of Komusbi also.

Greetings reader. I'm Ebenezer Pixel, creator of Pixel Sumo in Second Life. First off, this is not associated with Pixel Sumo, the Chris O'Shea website. That being said, allow me to bring you up to speed on Pixel Sumo from its humble beginnings.

Pixel Sumo started on Mar 16, 2006 in Eldora. People came and competed and the champion of the first matches was david Tapioca who defeated Kumiko Takashi.

I showed the new SL sport to my friend Tateru Nino and she gave me a nice write up in her blog.
